Licensed Veterinary Technician (LVT) - Full-Time
Position Overview
Licensed Veterinary Technician's (LVT) provide compassionate patient care and technical support to veterinarians. Responsibilities include assisting with exams, diagnostics, anesthesia, surgery, laboratory testing, medication administration, and client education. Maintains accurate medical records, supports hospital operations, and promotes a positive, collaborative work environment. Requires current LVT license and strong communication skills.
Primary Responsibilities
Patient Care & Nursing
• Provide compassionate, high-standard care to hospitalized and outpatient pets,
ensuring comfort, cleanliness, and safety
• Perform patient assessments, monitor hospitalized patients, and alert
veterinarians to changes in condition
• Administer medications and treatments, including IV, IM, and SQ injections
• Perform basic emergency care, CPR, intensive care, and post-operative care
• Recognize and follow protocols for contagious diseases
Animal Handling
• Safely and humanely restrain animals during examinations, diagnostics, and
procedures
• Transport, cage, exercise, and handle fractious or fearful animals with care and
professionalism
Exam Room & Client Assistance
• Assist veterinarians during exams by preparing patients, restraining animals,
gathering instruments, and documenting procedures
• Obtain patient histories, vitals, lab samples, and pre-exam information
• Educate clients on diagnoses, preventive care, treatments, medications, and
discharge instructions
• Prepare and communicate treatment plans, including explaining the value of
recommended services
• Ensure all services are accurately documented and invoiced
Diagnostics & Laboratory Procedures
• Perform routine in-house laboratory tests and prepare samples for outside
laboratories
• Collect, prepare, and properly handle specimens according to hospital protocols
• Take and maintain diagnostic radiographs using proper positioning and safety
procedures
• Monitor and maintain laboratory supplies
Surgical & Anesthesia Support
• Prepare surgical patients and operating rooms
• Clean, pack, sterilize, and autoclave surgical instruments
• Monitor anesthesia, vital signs, oxygen saturation, and fluid therapy
• Assist veterinarians during surgery and dentistry procedures
• Place and maintain urinary catheters
Medication & Pharmacy Duties
• Calculate dosages and prepare prescriptions accurately
• Draw up vaccines, prepare syringes, and label medications appropriately
• Maintain knowledge of prescription and over-the-counter medications
• Document controlled drug use and ensure accurate billing
Medical Records & Administrative Duties
• Maintain accurate, complete medical records, reminders, and invoices
• Admit and discharge patients, ensuring proper documentation and patient
readiness
• Assist with appointment scheduling, follow-ups, and client communication
• Maintain inventory, restock supplies, rotate stock, and notify management of
ordering needs
Client Relations & Education
• Communicate professionally and compassionately with clients regarding patient
status and care plans
• Educate clients on preventive medicine, diagnostics, medications, and
post-treatment care
• Promote hospital products, programs, and services through ethical, passive
marketing
• Provide educational materials and follow up with clients as needed
Facility & Equipment Maintenance
• Clean and maintain exam rooms, treatment areas, labs, and equipment
• Ensure hospital areas remain organized, stocked, and well maintained
Professional Expectations
• Demonstrate flexibility, initiative, strong time management, and multitasking skills
• Respond calmly and efficiently to emergencies
• Maintain professionalism, teamwork, and a positive attitude
• Adhere to hospital policies, safety standards (OSHA), and scheduling
requirements
• Participate in staff meetings and continuing education
Reporting Structure
• Reports directly to the Lead Technician and/or Practice Manager
• Receives daily direction from veterinarians
Work Environment & Physical Requirements
• Ability to lift up to 40 pounds independently and more with assistance
• Ability to stand, walk, and work energetically for extended shifts (sometimes over
10 hours)
• Willingness to work around loud noises, strong odors, animal waste, and potential
exposure to bites, scratches, and contagious diseases
Qualifications
*Required:
• High school diploma or equivalent
• Licensed Veterinary Technician (LVT), license UTD.

Compensation negotiable based on credentials and experience with a hourly pay rate starting at $27-$32 / hour. The actual rate offered will carefully consider a wide range of factors, including your skills, qualifications, experience, and location.
• Minimum of one year of veterinary or medical experience with increasing
responsibility
• Excellent communication, organizational, and client-service skills
• Demonstrated compassion for animals and empathy for clients
Preferred:
• Three or more years of veterinary practice experience
