Job Title: Shelter Veterinarian, Humane Society of St. Lucie County
Location: Port St. Lucie, FL
Reports To: Executive Director
Position Type: Full-Time, Exempt. This is an at-will employment position, meaning that either party can terminate the employment relationship at any time, for any reason or no reason, without prior notice.
Compensation: $135,000-150,000
Benefits: PTO, Sick Days, paid Holidays, Health Insurance Stipend and Continuing Education Credit Reimbursement
About the Role
We’re looking for a compassionate, skilled veterinarian to join our team and make a direct impact on the lives of shelter animals every day. This role blends hands-on medical care with leadership, offering the opportunity to shape and advance our shelter medicine program.
You’ll provide high-quality care to a diverse population of animals while working closely with leadership to ensure best practices and a positive, team-driven environment.
What You’ll Do
- Provide daily medical care, including exams, diagnostics, and treatment
- Perform spay/neuter surgeries, vaccinations, and microchipping
- Lead and support veterinary technicians and assistants and contribute to a collaborative team culture
- Conduct regular population rounds and help manage herd health
- Develop and improve medical protocols aligned with shelter medicine best practices
- Assist with intake evaluations and guide outcomes for animals in care
- Maintain accurate medical records and ensure regulatory compliance
- Participate in on-call rotation, occasional weekends, and special events
Requirements
What You’ll Be Responsible For
- Ensure medical care and operations meet all regulatory and safety standards (DEA, OSHA, state guidelines)
- Oversee and continuously improve shelter medical protocols and population health programs
- Conduct regular population rounds and monitor disease prevention, treatment, and outbreak response
- Manage medical inventory, controlled substances, and the Emergency Medical Fund
- Collaborate with leadership to guide animal care decisions and overall shelter outcomes
- Provide intake evaluations, diagnostics, treatment, and surgical care, including spay/neuter
- Support humane decision-making, including euthanasia when necessary
- Maintain clear, accurate medical records and ensure proper treatment plans are followed
- Assist with cruelty case evaluations and documentation when needed
Leadership & Team Support
- Lead, mentor, and support veterinary and animal care staff
- Promote safe, humane handling practices (Fear Free preferred)
- Provide guidance on medical cases and day-to-day problem solving
- Foster a positive, collaborative, and respectful team culture
- Partner with leadership on hiring, training, and staff development
Qualifications
- Active Florida veterinary license and DEA license
- Professional liability insurance
- Shelter medicine and high-volume spay/neuter experience preferred
- Strong leadership, communication, and organizational skills
- Ability to thrive in a fast-paced, dynamic environment
- Sound judgment, adaptability, and a team-first mindset
