JOB SUMMARY
The pathology residency is a one year of professional service training (generally July 1-June 30), with annual reappointment for a total of three years based upon the resident's performance evaluations. - The resident's primary mentor is the residency training director, with additional interaction between the other faculty pathologists and other faculty and staff. -Upon satisfactory performance and mutual interest, eligible veterinary pathology residents may at the conclusion of one or more years, enter into the Comparative Medicine Fellowship Training Program and may pursue an advanced degree
GOALS OF THE PROGRAM
The residency training program will provide the resident:
1. The environment, caseload, and training to enable the trainee to become a competent entry level diagnostic veterinary pathologist, with eligibility to sit the ACVP board certification examination.
2. An opportunity to become acquainted with and support research programs ongoing at the University.
3. The possibility of entering into a research fellowship at the end of the residency, based on the resident's performance, qualifications, and mutual agreement of the relevant faculty involved.
4. An opportunity to publish clinical case reports or descriptive pathologic findings.
EDUCATION/EXPERIENCE
DVM from an AVMA-accredited institution or licensed in at least one state in the United States of America. Trainees must obtain a grade level of B or better in required courses. Trainees are evaluated on professional service skills in the manner outlined in the Standard Operating Procedure for Evaluation of Trainees.
LICENSURE, CERTIFICATION, and/or REGISTRATION
Trainees are expected to become eligible for board certification by the American College of Veterinary Pathologists (ACVP) and must complete all ACVP training requirements and develop adequate pathology skills.
PROGRAM COMPONENTS
Required Formal Instruction COMD 711/712 Comparative Pathology Conference (weekly) COMD 703 Diseases of Laboratory Animals (offered in even numbered years)
COMD 706 Animal Models in Biomedical Research (offered in odd numbered years)
COMD 715 Ultrastructural Pathology Laboratory Animal Medicine Grand Rounds and Journal Club (weekly)
Virtual Primate Pathology Conference (monthly)
Gross pathology practice exams (weekly)
Microscopic pathology practice exams (twice monthly)
Informal Instruction and Responsibilities Includes, but not limited to:
Gross and histopathologic examination of all species in the vivarium, with a caseload of approximately 500 necropsies/year, at all campuses of Wake Forest University. The species distribution is approximately 75% rodents, 15% nonhuman primates, and 10% other species. Surgical biopsies and clinical pathology cases are also routinely completed.
Pathology support for animal health surveillance and other preventative medicine programs.
Professional skills relating to the interaction between laboratory animal veterinarians and investigators.
Presentation skills. - Participation in national and regional meetings is encouraged, for example annual meetings of the ACVP, Primate Pathology Workshop and Society for Toxicologic Pathologists.
Active participation in case selection and preparation for yearly submission to the Wednesday Slide Conference and twice yearly submissions to the Virtual Primate Conference.
Participation in the annual Comparative Medicine Research Day.
