Mariposa Veterinary Wellness Center is a privately owned, AAHA-accredited small animal and exotics hospital located in Lenexa, Kansas, in the Kansas City metro area. Since 2007, we’ve focused on personalized, relationship-based care for dogs, cats, birds, reptiles, small mammals, and the occasional wildlife case in collaboration with local rehabilitators.

Our team practices high-quality medicine with a strong emphasis on client education, low-stress handling, and thoughtful case management. We offer comprehensive general practice services along with dentistry, abdominal ultrasound, and integrative modalities such as acupuncture, herbal medicine, and veterinary medical manipulation. Technicians and support staff are utilized to the full extent of their training so doctors can focus on diagnostics, treatment planning, and communication.

Mariposa is known for its fun, slightly quirky culture (yes, there is a resident cockatoo) and supportive, collaborative team. We value kindness, curiosity, and work–life balance, and we strive to create an environment where both patients and people feel genuinely cared for.

Company History

Mariposa Veterinary Wellness Center was established in 2007 by Dr. Michelle Chappell with the vision of creating a warm, relationship-centered veterinary practice grounded in compassionate, individualized care. In 2011, Dr. Sheila Dodson purchased the clinic and guided its growth into the trusted, AAHA-accredited hospital it is today. During her tenure, Mariposa expanded its services to include dentistry, integrative therapies such as acupuncture and herbal medicine, and a strengthened focus on low-stress, Fear Free–aligned handling.

In 2016, Dr. JC Burcham became a co-owner, bringing additional expertise in avian and exotic medicine and supporting Mariposa’s continued evolution as a unique, wellness-focused practice. Throughout its growth, Mariposa has remained committed to its founding values of kindness, respect, and personalized attention.
