The Opportunity
We are looking for an experienced Licensed Veterinary Technician to join our overnight Emergency and Critical Care team.
Overnight technicians are essential to the hospital’s ability to provide safe and continuous care. In this role, you will manage emergency arrivals, assist with patient stabilization, closely monitor hospitalized and critical patients, perform advanced technical duties, and communicate meaningful changes to the attending veterinarian.
This position is best suited for an LVT who is confident working with greater independence, recognizes subtle changes in patient condition, prioritizes effectively, and remains steady during high-acuity or unpredictable situations.
What You’ll Do
- Provide advanced nursing care for emergency, critical, and hospitalized patients throughout the overnight shift.
- Assist with triage, emergency stabilization, and life-saving interventions under the direction of the attending veterinarian.
- Closely monitor patient status, identify changes or complications, and escalate concerns immediately.
- Report treatment progress, adverse reactions, client communications, and changes in patient condition for appropriate documentation and follow-up.
- Administer prescribed medications, fluids, constant-rate infusions, blood products, and other treatments while ensuring accurate dosages.
- Place and maintain intravenous catheters and assist with urinary catheters, feeding tubes, oxygen therapy, and other patient-support interventions.
- Collect and process blood, urine, cytology, and other diagnostic samples.
- Assist with radiographs, blood work, point-of-care testing, and emergency diagnostic procedures.
- Prepare patients and equipment for emergency procedures, anesthesia, and surgery.
- Assist with anesthesia induction, monitoring, recovery, and post-operative care.
- Operate and maintain patient monitors, anesthesia machines, oxygen equipment, diagnostic tools, infusion pumps, and other veterinary medical equipment.
- Maintain detailed and timely medical records documenting patient assessments, treatments, procedures, and communications.
- Communicate professionally and compassionately with clients, including providing updates and supporting difficult or emotionally sensitive conversations.
- Assist with overnight admissions, transfers, and morning discharges when applicable.
- Prepare clear and complete patient handoffs for the incoming day team.
- Maintain clean, organized, and stocked treatment areas, patient cages, and equipment spaces.
- Participate in training, continuing education, department meetings, and hospital initiatives.
- Support urgent staffing needs and on-call responsibilities when assigned.
What We’re Looking For
- Current Texas LVT license or ability to obtain licensure before beginning employment.
- At least two years of experience in emergency, critical care, specialty, or a 24-hour veterinary hospital preferred.
- Demonstrated experience with emergency stabilization, critical patient monitoring, anesthesia, and hospitalized patient care.
- Confidence recognizing changes in patient status and communicating concerns promptly.
- Ability to work effectively with greater independence while remaining collaborative and accountable.
- Strong organization, prioritization, and medical-record documentation skills.
- Exceptional reliability and sound judgment during overnight operations.
- Emotional maturity and the ability to remain calm during high-acuity emergencies.
- Compassionate and professional communication with clients and team members.
- Commitment to professional development in emergency and critical care.
- Alignment with VCVS values of learning, compassion, teamwork, accountability, and integrity.
